Can a clutch slip in a single gear?

Seems like my DD is slipping in second, but not in the other gears. Sometimes it feels like it's slightly slipping in 3 and 4, but not as much as second. Is that even possible or am I going crazy?

sure, it would slip more in lower gears because lower ratio = more torque?

It has to do with the amount of torque trying to be transmitted across the clutch. Try upshifting too early and heavy throttle. That is the easiest way to confirm if the clutch is slipping. Rev changes without speed change are a sure sign of a bad clutch.

No that makes sense since the torque being put through the clutch varies with RPM, thus its going to vary with gear. My old Jetta TDI with an ECU tune would slip a bit in 5th, but no where else

You'll find it more often in a higher gear at peak torque. (most power, most resistance) When you're in a lower gear, there is less resistance, and the clutch will hold it.

Pay attention to the conditions when it slips and avoid them. I have nursed a clutch for months.

No that would be the opposite. For a given RPM and throttle opening, the torque generated by the engine is the same.

However, the longer the gear, the higher the car "resists" acceleration. So the clutch should start slipping in the top gears first.

That's why most remappers will tell you to be careful if you remap a turbo engine, and avoid going WOT @ peak torque rpm in the last gears.

..did you just change your comment? in my notifications, it came up as "is the sidewalk slippery?".

Thank you for the advice

I made a slippery sidewalk analogy, but after I reading it a second time, it wasn't very good.

I keep thinking my clutch is slipping, but then again it's winter in Michigan so I don't think my car has been on dry pavement since November. And mine is the reverse where 1st/second seem to "slip" at high RPMs but are fine for freeway passing in 4th. That's the test - drop a gear or two and stomp it for a pass. Do your revs surge for a moment before you go faster?

And here's a simple test to check clutch health - Put it in gear at idle and just let off the clutch. My friend's car with a ruined clutch actually took a while to die out as there was so little friction the engine could spin freely for a while. Whereas in my jetta it just stalls. Instantly.

I don't really watch my RPMs, but I can feel the clutch engage and it's smooth, but when I press the gas, nothing happens for 1/2sec to 1sec, then it suddenly lurches.

gummed up throttle body? Maybe dirty injectors? How long since you've done a good service like spark plugs and wires, or run some proper injector cleaner (not the tank treatment, the actual machine that cleans the injectors)

Throw the car in a too high gear then stomp on the throttle. If RPM goes up prior to the car's speed you have a slipping clutch. If you're experiencing some delay in RPMs rising you have another issue (dirty throttle body is somewhat common).

This is exactly the answer. The clutch in my previous car started slipping - 5th or 6th gear at low RPM, max boost/torque (it was a tuned 335i so it was a torque monster). The rpms would surge about 500 or so then dip back to normal and keep pulling.

BMW tried to tell me they "couldnt reproduce the behavior" so I made sure it got a little worse then demonstrated it with the head tech in the car. It's possible to nurse the clutch for a long time in this situation, but when it's under warranty like mine was I just want it to fail and have it replaced.

You are on point good sir.

You'll slip at most tq and most resistance.
